About
Hi, my name is Julie McAllister. I am happily married and the mother of two boys with special needs. My oldest was diagnosed with Asperger’s Syndrome (an Autism Spectrum Disorder) at age 5 1/2 and the youngest developed multiple food protein intolerances shortly after birth.
After my youngest was born and developed multiple food protein intolerances, an interstate move back to Texas from Nebraska, and due to dealing with a then-undiagnosed son with Asperger’s syndrome, I began to suffer from depression. However, I was wrongly diagnosed and subsequently suffered severe negative side effects from the medications I was prescribed. At one of my lowest points, I had a dear friend tell me, “Julie, you have to be your own advocate because no one else will.” Thus began a challenging but extremely rewarding journey to become healthy in body, mind and spirit.
I no longer take any prescription medications for depression or for any other medical issues unless it’s absolutely necessary. I discovered the healing power of herbs, forgiveness, affirmations, meditation and good nutrition. I became much more spiritual and as a result of all these changes, I became happier than I’d ever been in my life. I went from being a critical, glass half-empty kind of person to one who tries to see the good in everything. My husband told me one night that I was “blossoming like a flower before” his eyes.
One day, early in 2010, my Higher Power told me that it was time for me to use what I had learned to start helping other mothers of special-needs children and children with disabilities. And so began Special Moms, Special Healing. I started looking around online and for other resource material that targeted mothers of special needs children and there was not much, if anything, available. With the rise in the number of special needs children especially in certain diagnoses (Autism Spectrum Disorders, ADHD and ADD, etc.), someone needs to focus on the needs of the mother. And because I am one of those mothers myself, I felt I was qualified.
I feel that in order to be the best possible parent, mothers have to be healthy too. That can definitely be a struggle when you’re focusing so much time on your children. I will give you tips and other resources on how YOU can be healthy, so that you feel great. When YOU feel great, that positive energy will translate to everyone you interact with, especially your children. Special Moms, Special Healing is your one-stop resource for taking care of yourself in body, mind and spirit.
I have been working with parents of challenging children for many years. Before becoming a stay-at-home mother when my oldest was born, I worked with at-risk children through the juvenile probation field and in the non-profit Big Brothers Big Sisters. My last position was as CEO of Big Brothers Big Sisters in Austin, TX.

Julie,
This is WONDERFUL! Fantastic site. Cheerful, helpful, uplifting. What a special place.
Lisa
Thank you SO much Lisa. Your insight is so important to me.
Julie,
I am very proud of you, as I always have been and always will be. There is an old Danish saying, “Life is not holding a good hand…Life is playing a difficult hand very well.” You have mastered this!
Your site is intelligent, compassionate, energetic and genuinely well rounded, just as you are. I worked with Julie, years ago…. her ability to inspire people she worked with and children who had so many life challenges, was amazing to witness. Julie has a thirst for knowledge, I have yet to see wane.
It is that very quality which drives Julie’s dynamic personality. Julie views herself as a messenger for a bigger purpose, she takes tasks and endeavors very seriously and no detail is viewed as unimportant. This is reflected in the way she addresses everyone around her and everything she does. She possess the ability to make lasting impressions and touches people so they never can forget her or her message.
Julie, you have a wonderful program here!!! To all of you reading her site, hold on because Julie will pick you up and take you along for the most enlightening and delightful ride that you will never forget!
good luck Julie and hugs to the kids!!!
OK Anya, I’m crying. I don’t even know how to respond to this other than to say, “I love you” and I am so thankful to have you in my life.
Julie,
I’m so glad that I found your site. It’s definitely something that I needed today. I am taking my 12 y/o son, Austin, to the neuropsychologist today. He was diagnosed with SPD, as was I, and they think that he might also have Asperger’s. I have been quite stressed lately and your experience and wisdom is a blessing!
Thank you so much for sharing!
Hugs,
Erica
Erica, I’m so glad you found me too. I have walked in your exact shoes and know what emotions you are having. Please feel free to send me an e-mail (go to the Contact page) if you have any questions whatsoever. My son started with SPD also and I always say he got an “upgrade” to Asperger’s Syndrome. I can give you some great resources on Asperger’s if that’s the diagnosis he ends up getting.
Wow, thank you for your website! I am the mom of 4 (my #3 child has Down Syndrome). I struggle daily, and this morning in an attempt to work on yet another disability issue, I discovered your site. Your words are my words – all of them! It’s amazing. I am very happy to have found you. Thank you, Thank you, Thank you. Now, back to potty training and all the difficulties that go along with it. Our little one had multiple surgeries on her rectum, and apparently I am attempting the ‘impossible’ although as you and I both know, nothing is impossible with our children.
Linda,
I’m so glad you found me! Raising a child with special needs can be uplifting, inspiring, and miraculous, but it can also be extremely challenging and isolating. It’s time to start speaking out about all of it so that we can do it together. I am sending you positive energy for your “far-from-impossible” task. You can and will do it!!
Julie –
I’d love to invite you over for a coffee so we could chat – too bad we live so far ( I’m in Toronto, Canada). I would give you a hug and say “thank you” with a tear of gratitude for what you are doing to help mothers of special needs children. You have created a wonderful space to help so many moms – feel positive, loved and energized. You have certainly made me sigh & smile and have made my day a little brighter having read your recent Blog Post. I will definitely be sharing your site on my facebook page.
Wishing you comfort and luv!
